Catchfly and Meadowsweet

Catchfly and Meadowsweet

What I"m calling "Catchfly" is probably Silene ameria. I think this is all from a packet of seeds purchased from Burpee more than ten years ago as Silene 'Electra' alternatively it came in some packet of "Wildflower" seeds. Silene ameria is rarely offered in flower catalogs. I think probably because it seeds itself in too vigorously for most. Also other nice species. It is often available as a "Wildflower" seed. I treasure my self-sowing flowers.

Catalog Reprint 1891 Seed Annual D. M. Ferry & Co.

A complete black and white reproduction of the 1891 Seed Annual of D. M. Ferry & Co. with a new introduction by Ross Bolton. This catalog is a must have for any heirloom gardener as it has over 100 pages filled with Vegetable Seeds, Flower Seeds (geraniums, foxglove, datura, more!), bulbs, as well as farm and garden tools Thirty years before the formation of the Department of Agriculture, it was in 1856 D. M. Ferry was just trying to earn some money for college at a little seed company in Detroit. Within 10 years he not only began to run the company but also named it after himself. His big innovation was distributing seed packets. These packets were even tailored to the retailer's location, enabling Ferry to claim his seeds were "guaranteed to grow." In 1930 the Ferry Company merged with C. C. Morse to become Ferry Morse Seed Company.
